A Parable

A parable for you today:

Once upon a time there was an HR guy, I’ll call him Honathan Juisinga to keep him anonymous.

Upon joining his new organization, Honathan is blessed with a role that fits perfectly with his Strengths. He is passionate about working to improve the culture for every employee. He partners up with an amazing team to help coworkers reach their professional goals. For many years, he can’t imagine being more engaged in his work.

Then one day, a desire to expand his role seizes him; he ignores the very good advice he gives to others and he begins to pursue responsibility outside of his areas of strength. Why would he do such a thing? Maybe because he thinks he should show he is ambitious, or because others encourage him or because the job pays more money. Anyway, he soon accomplishes this goal and is entrusted with responsibilities well outside of his Strengths.

It’s not long before Honathan’s struggles emerge. Team members are distanced, customers are disappointed and his effectiveness declines. Attempts to delegate responsibility to make up for weaknesses are well intended, but fail. He gets some good stuff done with a lot of extra work, but others could have done the job faster and better. He misses working with his Strengths, but ineffectiveness in his areas of weakness demands too much time. He brings frustration home to his family instead of the fulfillment that made him a better husband and dad.

Finally, his leaders have had enough and they split the department he is leading in half. Weakness areas are replaced with opportunities to redeem himself, but Honathan doesn’t take the change well. He’s humiliated and disappointed at his failure and the last dregs of his engagement are torn away. In shock, he stops pushing for change and decides to play it safe. It sucks.

For months he struggles with anger, frustration and fear. Slowly, very slowly, his passion for the people around him again wakes in his heart. Excitement and interest rekindle the light in his eyes. He comes to realize that his experience reinforces how important the organizational cultural goals are. He admits his failure to his bosses, shocked that he’s been disengaged for just one year; it seemed longer than the many years he spent engaged. They encourage him to get back to where he started and then go further.

So now he’s back; engaged and in full pursuit of a culture of Strengths-based Servant Leadership. He’s in the right job for now, but will keep an eye open for opportunities to add value where it makes sense and he wants the same for you! If you can’t say you’re fully engaged please contact me, err, him. If not him, find someone! Talk to your supervisor, the HR department (either Organizational Development or Employee Services) or anyone you trust to support your efforts. You deserve nothing less than fully engaging your talents in your work and creating results for an organization that trusts you, values your contributions and wants the best for you and your family.
