Benefits Price Matching

Do you price match?  Do you have any promos or coupons?

Are these new questions we have to ask with medical services and prescriptions?  The sad answer is YES!

Below are two examples from our own employees that have reaped the benefits from taking the time to make smart health care decisions:

Recently we had an employee who had to get a prescription for an Epinephrine Auto Injector (EpiPen).  The hospital where the employee was being treated called in the prescription to a local pharmacy the employee regularly used.  When the employee called to find out the cost of the prescription, they were shocked $778 for one EpiPen!!  The employee was very cost conscientious, so decided to call around to other pharmacies to see if anyone had it for cheaper.  Much to his surprise, he reached another local pharmacy where he was informed the cost of the EpiPen was only about $300 and the pharmacist had a coupon for an additional 50% off!  This brought the price down to around $149.

The employee called back the hospital to move the prescription to the new cheaper pharmacy.  The hospital talked to the first pharmacy they had called (the one who said the price was $700+) and explained to them what the employee found out.  Another SURPRISE, the pharmacy said they could possibly PRICE MATCH.  The employee ended up getting the prescription at the 2^nd cheaper pharmacy.  Moral of the story:  Call around and price shop your prescriptions.  “Price check in the pharmacy”

Another example of savings with glasses:

Employee A was shopping for a new pair of frames and lenses and was sticker shocked at the cost of new glasses $700+!!!  They asked if the Vision Clinic had any specials or promotions going on, and the vision technician said “NO”.  As Employee A sat waiting to see the eye doctor, he noticed a sign “check our website for promotions.”  Not wanting to pay the full price for new glasses, the employee went online and found a coupon for 40% off all online order.  Hopeful, the employee asked the vision technician if they could use that coupon in store!  Much to the employees surprise and the technicians, the 40% off coupon worked resulting in a $300+ savings!!!

We strongly encourage all employees to shop around when it comes to medical, dental, or vision needs and confirm that your providers are in-network for the benefit plan.  Here are a few suggestions for making smart health care decisions:

*Talk to your doctor

• When prescribed medication ask your doctor if it is the most cost-effective option.  Request generic drugs instead of name brand.
• If a procedure or test is recommended ask your doctor if it is truly necessary or what  other options are available

*Do your research

• Call around to facilities in the area to find lowest cost procedures, treatments, and    medications.  Be assertive with questions about price and take good notes.

Let’s welcome Virginia Lopez who started on 07/25/2017 as an addition to the Human Resources team as a recruiter for Select Genetics in Missouri.

Virginia worked at Great Southern Bank as a teller, she has a few years in customer services. Virginia is currently attending Crowder College and focusing on getting a business degree.
