Ag Forte Safety Tip for the Summer:

Heat Exhaustion: Prevention, Risk Factors, Symptoms and Treatment

With summer temperatures comes a higher risk of heat exhaustion which can lead to heat stroke. Whether playing sports, having fun at the lake, working in an incubator in one of our hatcheries or catching on a breeder farm, we need to be aware of the symptoms of heat exhaustion and take precautions so that we don’t end up in the hospital being treated for heat stroke- which can cause damage to your brain, organs and possibly death.

Prevention includes the following:

  • Wear lightweight, loose fitting clothing and a wide brimmed hat
  • Use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher when in sun
  • Drink extra fluids, especially 1-2 hours before and during strenuous activities in high heat. Drink more after activities while cooling down.
  • Fluids should include some electrolytes as found in sports drinks
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine as these contribute to dehydration
  • Take frequent breaks to prevent becoming over-heated

Risk factors that can increase your chance of heat exhaustion:

  • Strenuous activity in hot and humid conditions. A heat index of 91°F and above make conditions more dangerous.
  • Dehydration
  • Alcohol use
  • Over dressing
  • Age- young and old are at a higher risk
  • Certain medications and health conditions

Symptoms of heat exhaustion can include:

  • Confusion
  • Dark-colored urine (signals dehydration)
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Muscle or abdominal cramps
  • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
  • Pale skin
  • Profuse sweating
  • Rapid heart beat

Treatment:

  • Immediately stop activity and get out of the heat if possible
  • Drink fluids, avoiding caffeine and alcohol
  • Remove tight or unnecessary clothing
  • Cool shower or sponge bath if available
  • Fans or other cooling factors- ice towels, shade

Get help and seek immediate medical attention if body temperature reaches 104°F or higher!

Let’s be sure to work together in recognizing the symptoms of heat exhaustion. It is much better to tell a co-worker to go get a drink and rest for a few minutes than to need to rush them to a hospital for treatment. In our business we know this can affect us year round, when we know better we can do better.

Ribbon Dance

Jake French (Nova-Tech Electrical Engineer) provided us this gem: It’s a video of Derek Worcester (Nova-Tech Engineer) and Nick Peterson (Nova-Tech Developer) doing a ribbon dance at the Stingers game last week. Derek won by a crowd vote. We really liked those cartwheels!

Dave’s Dark Side Mystery

Dave Dykshoorn, NTE Business Development Systems Supervisor, has another update from his Star Wars Mystery. If you don’t know what we are referring to, Dave has been trying to uncover what mysterious person (or people) had left a 2′ plush Darth Vader on his desk while he was gone one fateful week. These galactic artifacts have been continuing to show up. Take a look at the image below.

Dave reports – “Someone is still feeding my Starwars collection.  Still wonder what kind of project they want me to do…Still no one has claimed responsibility.”
