Select Genetics Happenings

Osceola 3rd Grade Field Day

The Select Genetics | Osceola Hatchery team participated in the local 3rd Grade Field Day.  This is an annual event held on the fairgrounds in Osceola and provides an opportunity to introduce kids to the agriculture industry.  The Osceola team organizes an interactive experience for the kids with:

  • A box of baby poults for the kids to hold
  • Turkey eggs and chicken eggs to compare (the eggs are passed around so the kids can look at the differences)
  • Gro gel (this is a green gel that is put inside the boxes with poults when they are shipped out).  The poults eat this to get their vitamins and nutrients while traveling. The kids LOVE to feel the gel, which is like a slime
  • A map of locations poults are shipped to throughout the United States and overseas
  • A picture of a wild turkey vs. a domestic turkey to show the comparison
  • A Hy-Vee semi-truck for the kids to look into and see how poults are transported

This is one of the 3rd graders favorite stations to visit during the field day!

Team members helping with the field day included:  Sabrina Hatfield, Service Supervisor; Moises Zavala, Egg Room Supervisor; Juan Mondragon, Maintenance/Assistant Manager; Kari Parnell, Office Administrator; and Donny Van Sickle, Truck Shop Mechanic.  Thank you all for your time and efforts highlighting the turkey industry for this event!

Flu Shots

Each year, as winter gets closer, flu season starts to ramp up.  In an effort to provide a healthy working environment for employees and team members, several flu shot clinics are held at locations throughout the organization.  Below are some pictures from recent clinics held in Missouri and Iowa.  If you have not yet received your flu shot, connect with your HR representative regarding options available to you.  Getting an annual flu vaccine is the best way to help protect against the flu and helps to protect the health and welfare of you, your coworkers, and our animals (the core of our business).
